On this date in 1847

On January 7, 1847, a formal treaty was signed to end the Battle of Santa Clara, which was the only campaign in the Northern District between the Californios and United States forces during the Mexican War, 1846-1848. The treaty was signed at Civic Center Park. Read more about the treaty signing on our Community Information Network.

This bayonet was discovered on the former Neves Ranch while digging to build the Central Library in 1965 and 1966. A serial number on the bayonet was used to date it and it is thought that it might have been used in the 1847 Battle of Santa Clara. For more information about the Santa Clara Campaign, read the book The Battle of Santa Clara by Dorothy Regnery or the history essay written by Lorie Garcia on the City's website.
