Celebrate READ Santa Clara's Book of Learner Writings - April 12

   

      Get your heart warmed and be inspired by the hard working adult learners who write about their journey to learn to read in the newest edition of In Our Words.  It will be released at its Book Launch on Saturday, April 12 from 2 - 4 p.m. at Mission City Center for the Performing Arts - Wilcox High School located at 3250 Monroe St. in Santa Clara.  Some of the authors will read from this new book.
      The event is free and open to the public.  There will be activities for children and dessert following the program.  Call (408) 615-2956 for more information.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

 

Did you know that March 2nd is Dr. Seuss' birthday? If he were alive today, he would be 110 years old! Theodore Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, wrote and illustrated over 60 books. His whimsical rhymes and drawings have made him one of the most beloved authors of young and old alike for generations.

 

Fun Facts:

• Seuss is an Austrian name, and is actually pronounced zoyss.
• For books that Seuss wrote but did not illustrate, he used the pen name "Theo LeSieg." (LeSieg is Geisel spelled backward.)
• His books have been translated into more than 15 languages.
• The book And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street was rejected by 27 publishers before being published by Vanguard Press in 1937.

Visit our display of Dr. Seuss’ books and DVDs in Youth Services. We will also have nametags available (while supplies last) for children to add to our walls in support of reading!  Also, March 3rd is designated Read Across America Day, so pledge to read at least one book with your child!

Hailey, a young library patron at Santa Clara Central Park Library, likes Dr. Seuss books because they are about "making rhymes and laughing." Stop by the library and check out a dose of laughter for yourself!

Job Hunter's Toolkit: LinkedIn at Santa Clara City Library

Help for your job search is around the corner at Santa Clara City Library.  Join us for the Job Hunter's Toolkit series beginning with three sessions on using LinkedIn in your jobsearch.

Two LinkedIn workshops taught by professional career advisors from NOVA: 

Using LinkedIn:  Set Up, Manage and Connect on Tuesday, February 25 from 1:00-2:30 in the Redwood Room and

Using LinkedIn: Find People, Use Groups, and Locate Job Postings on Tuesday, March 11 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the Margie Edinger Room.

Following the initial LinkedIn workshop, job hunters can get photos taken and other assistance from library staff in setting up their LinkedIn profiles in a hands-on lab in the Library's Technology Center on Tuesday, March 4 from 10:15-11:45. 

No sign up is necessary and all sessions are free and open to the public.  The Library is located at 2635 Homestead Rd., Santa Clara.  Call 408-615-2900 if you have questions.

Betsy and Tom Franco visit the library!

We were pleased to host Betsy Franco, author of over 80 books for children and young adults, and her son, artist Tom Franco at the library on Sunday afternoon. They talked about Betsy's new adult novel, Naked. 

Tom interviewed her about the book, and she in turn, interviewed him about his artwork and the illustrations he contributed to the novel. It was like listening in on a mother-son conversation. It was quite fun and we all enjoyed lots of laughs.

Barnes & Noble was on hand to sell books, and Betsy and Tom autographed books after the program.

Puppet Art Theatre: Jack and the Beanstalk at the Library

I love seeing traditional tales come to life with puppets! Santa Clara City Library not only has movies with puppets (Jim Henson production, The Muppets, and Sesame Street), but we also have on special occasions a live puppet presentation. Kids ages 3 and up were invited to a FREE live puppet performance on December 3^rd by the Puppet Art Theatre Company. The Puppet Art Theatre Co. presented their own holiday-style version of “Jack and the Beanstalk” which kids and parents enjoyed. The show was very funny, and the puppets engaged the audience with lots of questions. The puppeteer even showed us some sound effects, tricks, and what supplies she used to make the puppets. When asked what was your favorite part of the show, one boy replied, "when they fall down!"

Beautiful Delicious Bread at the Library

      Yesterday Breadmaking for Beginners continued the Sustainable U events at Santa Clara City Library.  Angela Ocana taught more than 50 people how to make their own artisan bread based on recipes from Tartine Bread by Chad Robertson.  Here are photos of two versions of the bread baked at home following the class.

Turkey Tales to Tell

Members of Santa Clara City Library came to the Youth Services desk to tell their tales of things they were thankful for this year, and we would like to share some with you! We had some great entries...

...and some awesome artwork, too.

And the number #1 Thing That You Are Thankful For is… BOOKS!  Books beat out Family by 29 votes!

 We also had a few entries which were stories. Here is a story about a Turkey named Sarah:

“Sarah loves to sing. She has the sweetest voice of an angel. One day, she was singing near her home- and a farmer that had come to collect a turkey for Thanksgiving heard her! He was really amazed that she had such a great voice. He called American Idol and asked if they would accept ANYONE to come and sing on stage. They said, yes! So the farmer caught Sarah, and took her to the American Idol audition. Sarah won every round. And she won American Idol! She is now famous around the world.”

Thank you to all who contributed to our turkey. Remember, the Santa Clara City Library will be closed November 28^th and 29^th for the holiday, but we will return with normal library hours on Saturday, November 30^th.
